Five nights was plenty of time to stay in the Fruita / Grand Junction area! We stayed at James M Robb Colorado River State Park, Fruita Section. It was HOT here, with temps up to 105 degrees. As long as we were in the shade or in the RV with the air moving, it was bearable, almost pleasant, but the sunshine was scorching! And it’s not nearly as windy here as we are used to in other parts of CO, plus no rain the entire time we visited. So, just HOT! We didn’t find too many things we wanted to do while here, either, so I had time to catch up on work, which was nice.

We had a lot of fun doing the Jet Boat tour in De Beque, CO. It was about 45 minutes back east on I-70, so I wasn’t sure if it’d be worth it, but Randy and I both agreed it was! Besides the speed and spins, the guide shared some local history and pointed out wildlife as we sped down the river. On the way back west, we stopped in Palisade to eat our picnic lunch at a park near the river. The trees there were cool! On our way out of town, we stopped at a fruit stand and bought a few Palisade peaches and some soft serve peach ice cream.

We also stopped at the Visitor’s Center in Grand Junction to get an idea of what else we’d like to do while in town. From there we drove to the east entrance of the Colorado National Monument, then to their Visitor’s Center.

One evening, we went on a bike ride on the “riverfront” trail; however, the section we rode from our campsite was mostly along a highway instead of the river. When we got back to the campground area, we rode around a lake and along the river near our campground, which I enjoyed more than the 10 miles round trip we did on the first trail.

Plus, I had a new experience, and learned a new lesson: Don’t try to get a bug out of your ear using your finger! A gnat flew into my ear while riding my bike and it tickled like crazy. Without thinking, I rubbed the tickle in my ear and the gnat actually stopped moving for a few seconds, to my relief. But then it flapped around again, and again I stuck my finger in my ear without thinking too much about it. After it stopped and started again, I finally realized that it was never going to be able to fly out if I kept pushing it back in, so I tilted my ear down and wiggled my head, looking like a crazy person, all while still riding my bike and making silly noises because of the tickle. Haha! It worked though, and my ear was again gnat free. <whew!>

The next day we caught up on some errands: Got twenty dollars worth of quarters at the bank to use at laundry mats, sent some mail from the Post Office, and went grocery shopping. We also walked around Grand Junction a bit, getting a few goodies at Enstrom Candies and eating lunch at the Rockslide Brewery. They’ve got a nice main street, with mature trees, art sculptures and went to see Gigi & Nate at the Regal, trying to use our subscription a couple of more times before we cancel it. (It was a touching movie — I recommend it!)
