This was our first stop in TN, staying at Yarberry Campground, to look at potential homes to purchase. Given a recommendation from a guy I work with who lives in Murfreesboro, TN, we contacted a realtor at Crye-Leike. We will be looking at too large of an area for one realtor to show us everything, so she connected us with other agents in the various areas we will be looking. Let the fun begin!

We met Diana Traylor at a Crye-Leike office, then followed her around to view 6 homes:

  • 1007 Tuskegee Dr, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 – We easily eliminated this home; the lot was more sloped than we wanted, so it wouldn’t be worth updating the older home.
  • 11441 Couch Mill Rd, Knoxville, TN 37931 – This home was ok, but the lot was too tight and mostly sloped.
  • 2180 Craigs Chapel Rd, Greenback, TN 37742 – This lot didn’t have as much privacy as Randy is looking for, but it had a nice level yard and a newer house. There was an interesting/weird closet area in the Jack & Jill bathroom upstairs. But there was no reason to immediately eliminate this home, so after we saw all them all, it became our 3rd choice of the day.
  • 6112 Highway 411, Madisonville, TN 37354 – This lot was off of a busy divided highway, but a knoll blocked the view of the road some. The house was ok, but there wasn’t much of a back yard, with the house sitting on the back of the property. This eventually became our 2nd choice of the day.
  • 257 Welch Rd, Tellico Plains, TN 37385 – We both really liked the look of this house, but it felt a bit small, with no bonus room, eating area or storage space. The lot was nice, with some flat yard before sloping towards a river. The worst thing about this property was getting to it — narrow, curvy, steep roads and a bit too far from a decent size town. Even with that though, this ended up as our top choice of the day given the nice house.

Even though we didn’t strike gold and find “the one” on our first day out looking, Randy & I both enjoyed driving around getting a feel for the area, including driving through Oak Ridge, home of The Manhattan Project / atomic bomb.

We also ate out one evening at Gondolier Pizza, which was really good!! Randy claims it’s the best pizza he’s ever had. We learned later that it was a chain restaurant, but we’ve decided that if we’ve never eaten there before, we will make an exception to our rule of not eating at chain restaurants during our travels.
