This stop was mostly just to break up the drive between Detroit and the Upper Peninsula. We stayed four nights at the Bay City State Recreation Area, where there wasn’t a lot to do, which was nice! I think I reserved the hardest site at this campground to back into, with a tree on either side of the pad. But Randy did a great job maneuvering into the spot!

We just spent one day seeing the area. We drove into Bay City, walked along the Saginaw River Riverwalk, and stopped at the City Hall to see the view of the city from the clock tower. Afterwards, we spent a few hours at a Saginaw Bay swim beach that was across the street from the campground. (Saginaw Bay is part of Lake Huron, so it’s the second Great Lake we’ve seen now.) The water was muddy, but there was a section of beach that was nice, and we enjoyed hanging out in the sun! Before heading back to the RV, we hiked a couple of miles along one of the recreation area’s trails. There wasn’t much to see, but we were glad to be out in the nice weather, still.

Unfortunately, our trip through Michigan coincided with Midge season. It got really windy on our last day there, and evidently the Midges hunker down instead of trying to fly around in the wind. Our bike cover and awnings were covered with them — it was both cool and kind of gross. I’m glad I was paying attention when I put the steps up, cause I almost lifted hundreds of them that were on the bottoms of the steps up into the RV. That would’ve been a shock to see so many flying around in the RV when we parked at the next location! I brushed them off with a broom first, so I only had to kill about a dozen that had snuck in as we were opening and closing the door. At least they don’t bite!
