Sonora, TX just happened to be a good location to break our trip to LA up. We stayed at Stadium RV Park for just one night and was not planning on doing any tourist activities. However, after talking to the camp host, we decided to tour the Caverns of Sonora the next morning, before heading out of town.
I wasn’t super excited to tour another cavern after spending so much time in one recently, but this one sounded like it would be different enough to make it worth it. And it did not disappoint. The first big difference was that it is a warm cave; 72°F and 98% humidity. (Feels like 85F/29C) I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a warm cave! Plus this was a guided tour with up to 12 people at a time — yay!
We had to wait about 30 minutes for our tour to start, so we wandered around their gift shop and then outside. I got a kick out the rooster and peacocks roaming freely around the parking lot. Once on the tour, we learned that a lot of the Caverns of Sonora are no longer “alive”. (There is no water dripping in sections of the caverns.) The guide was very, VERY persistent in telling us at EVERY stop not to touch any of the formations. She told a story of a college kid destroying a popular “butterfly” formation, getting fined a large amount of money, and them updating rules to try to prevent that from ever happening again.
Some of the formations were different from other caverns too. I especially thought the smooth arched walls were pretty cool. Once the tour was over, we drove back to the RV and continued our trip to Louisiana.
