We stayed at Meaher State Park for four nights, near Mobile, AL. On the first night there, we walked along a trail that had a nice boardwalk. We wondered whether or not the sign about not feeding or harassing the alligators was a joke, but then we saw an alligator swimming in the bay! The sunset here was gorgeous.

On Veterans Day, we spent a few hours at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park and did a self-guided tour of the USS Alabama Battleship and the USS Drum Submarine. The battleship was huge! It was super interesting to walk through it and try to imagine how the men lived and fought on board. The signs mentioned that the tools in the tool room had been there since the 40’s, since when the ship was decommissioned. I wondered whether or not some of the items in the store were original, too, or if they’d been recreated to just look like the old stuff. Next, we toured the submarine, which seemed SO tiny after spending so much time in the battleship. It’s hard to imagine guys having to live in such cramped quarters for very long.

I learned that one of my second cousins lived about 20 minutes away in Saraland, AL, so we stopped by to visit with her and her family for a bit. Afterwards, we walked around Mobile, AL. There was an art walk, a concert and a small walking parade around town, so there was plenty to entertain us for several hours. We also ate at a farm to table restaurant called The Noble South. I had the Wagyu Brisket with roasted vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes and it was DELICIOUS! One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time.
