Walnut Woods State Park had a very small, but quiet and peaceful, campground and a trail to the Raccoon River. We only stayed there two nights and spent a day in downtown Des Moines. If I’d realized how close the Bridges of Madison County were, we would’ve probably done that, too, but only realized it as we were leaving town and saw signs for them.

In Des Moines, we walked around the Pappajohn Sculpture Park for almost an hour. Randy took some photos and read about each sculpture from a website. Most of the stuff he read sounded like they were trying too hard to come up with something to say about the piece, but a little bit of it was interesting. It was a cool area (but HOT, in the mid-80s and sunny) and enjoyable to look around, even if I did roll my eyes at the online info about it, haha.

We had time on the meter when we were done looking at the sculptures, so we walked to an area that had music playing and food trucks lined up. Unfortunately, they were closing down and driving away when we got to them. We were bummed to see the ice cream truck go, ha. So we walked back to the truck and drove to a place called West End Architectural Salvage. They had an impressive collection of old stuff, including the super old building all the stuff was housed in! It would’ve been fun to walk around with the owner to hear stories of how they acquired some it.

It was too early to eat dinner yet, so we walked through the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall before eating a 5pm dinner at Zombie Burger. They had some unique choices for burgers and both Randy and I enjoyed it. (Randy had BBQ, Ranch Dressing and Bacon; I had goat cheese, bacon and caramelized onions) Neither of us ended up ordering a shake, but they were unique too, with alcohol and funky flavors in them. Then we stopped at Walmart for a few things before heading back to the RV.
