We dropped our RV off at the shop to get a few things worked on while back in Monument, where we could bum a room from our good friends Jason & Emily Schott. We scheduled a few weeks in the Monument / Colorado Springs area, to give us time to catch up with friends, get check-ups with doctors and dentists, and allow Randy to get in a bunch of qualifications and volunteer hours with the Sheriff’s Office. It was fun to watch people’s reactions at church when they saw us. Most said hi, then did a double take when they remembered they had not seen us in a over a year. A few didn’t seem to have noticed that we had been gone, haha.

After the RV shop had a chance to get approval for warranty work and place orders, we picked up the RV and drove to Cheyenne Mountain State Park, where we stayed for two weeks. I actually spent a few nights up in Parker, dog sitting for my sister while she went to visit Marissa in Baltimore. (They had a fun train ride to/from New York City and saw “The Play that Goes Wrong” on Broadway!) Meanwhile, Randy stayed in the RV and was closer to the venue where he was doing traffic control and security for the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. When Robin got back from Baltimore, she took me to the Schott’s house and they drove me to the rodeo so Randy could take me back to the RV afterwards. (Only having one vehicle now gets complicated sometimes!) Congrats to Jason for winning the pie eating contest at the rodeo! We had fun walking around the “fun zone” then watching the rodeo. I even rode a mechanical bull for the first time ever. I didn’t do very good, but it was still fun. Then, after four days working the rodeo, Randy did security at El Paso County Fair for a few days. Needless to say, he wore himself out, but still enjoyed it.

When we checked out of the state park, we dropped the RV off at the shop again and moved back into the Schott’s house for a few days. The RV shop was able to replace a compartment door that they had done a horrible job of replacing the year before, and they replaced the refrigerator that had stopped cooling/freezing consistently. But, they didn’t get the stretched/wrinkled rubber membrane issue fixed yet. (We must have had a small hole somewhere in our sealant that allowed air to get under the rubber membrane while driving and bubble it up from the roof; then it wrinkled up as it laid back down.) While it was sitting on their lot, there was a hail storm that cracked three vents and splintered the roof enough that the service tech said we should have insurance replace the entire roof.

The good news was that we were going to have to pay almost as much as our deductible to have the wrinkled membrane repaired; and now we will get a new and improved roof for cheap (it evidently should not be as soft as it is when walking on it, according to the RV tech at the shop). The bad news is that the lady from Progressive who looked at the roof did not bother talking to the service guy who could tell there was damage and missed seeing it herself; so she closed the claim saying the cost of repair would be lower than our deductible. She said the rubber membrane needed to be pulled back in order for her to see the damage and approve replacing it. But they are booked too far out with appraisals for them to look at it before we leave for the Rocky Mountain National Park, so we will need to go back to COS instead of starting the next leg of our trip through Kansas to Missouri.
Oh well, I will start rescheduling the next couple of weeks and we’ll make the best of the extra time in Monument by enjoying more time with our friends! Since temps are hotter than normal this summer, I’m not too sad about spending less time driving through Kansas.
