Our first one night stay while driving across Kansas was Lake Scott State Park. Since I hadn’t been sure when we’d be leaving Monument, I had not made a reservation here; but I saw online that there were plenty of spaces available for walk-ins, so we decide to give it a shot. It was nice to be able to drive around to choose the spot we wanted, instead of having to pick it online. There were a few shady spots available, so we picked the one that looked the shadiest and still had a view of the lake at a distance. It was way off the road, so there wasn’t any traffic noise, but the grasshoppers (we think) were unbelievably loud! Our white noise machine covered up the sound at night, though, so it didn’t bother us; it was just kind of funny to hear them be so noisy.

This state park was a little off our direct route, but it was close to one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas that I was interested in seeing, Monument Rocks. The large rock formation in the middle of nowhere, with flat land all around it, was weird but cool. It probably would not have been worth driving down the 7 mile dirt road in most other states; but since Kansas doesn’t have a lot of other things to see, it stood out and was interesting enough.

On our way back to the campground, we stopped at Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park and hiked the quarter mile trail to the overlook. Again, it was an interesting area compared to other parts of Kansas. But it’s hard not to compare it to other badlands we’ve visited which were way cooler. Worth a stop if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t say it’s worth driving too far out of your way for.
