We finally made it to Rifle Gap State Park on the last night of our five night reservation. Thankfully, we were able to cancel the other nights and get most of our money back. No issues with the truck, but we never noticed issues with it before either. We arrived early afternoon, so we had enough time to spend a couple of hours at the lake before dinner. The lake was super low and had a super duper muddy bottom. The pics show how far we sank into the mud while trying to walk deep enough into the water to sit in the floats. Once we were on the water, we relaxed and enjoyed the sun and breeze while floating around. After we got out, once again sinking in the mud, we walked up to the boat inspection station to hose off; thankful to not have to get mud in the truck. Once my legs were dry, I noticed how much smoother the lower parts were compared to the upper dried out skin above! I joked about wishing I’d covered more of my body with the mud and about going back to get a bucket of it to take with me for future use. Even after putting lotion on my entire legs, the top part dried back out while the lower part stayed smooth looking. Amazing! I guess those expensive spa treatments are really on to something!! So, if you’re ever in the Rifle area, save yourself a few bucks and just go to the lake instead of the spa!
We were planning to drive back into Rifle to grab dinner, but wanted to also check out the nearby Rifle Falls State Park and were afraid it would get too dark before we had the chance. So, we decided to go to the falls first and were glad we did. We ended up spending a couple of hours there, too, hiking around the falls and exploring several caves. It’s a pretty cool area (literally — the caves were much cooler than the outside temp).
I don’t normally like to eat dinner so late, but I wanted to at least drive down Rifle’s main street before leaving town. After we parked and walked around a bit, we decided to go ahead and eat at the Brickhouse Pizzaria. I just ordered a small salad, which I didn’t feel quite as bad about eating at 8pm. BUT, after dinner we stopped at Moma’s Artisinal Ice Cream shop which the waitress recommended & I got a rolled ice cream treat that negated the salad. 🙂 Oh well, it was worth it!
It might have been nice to stay at least one more night here to explore the area a bit more, but I think we experienced the best parts in the small amount of time we had here. So, moving on…
