After another 6-7 hours of driving, we stayed one night in the sleepy little town of Sayre, OK. We were greeted with crazy winds, as you can see in the video below. The Sayre City Park Campground was first come, first serve and only cost $12 to stay at, so it was great for a place to sleep! BUT, you get what you pay for, and a bunch of their electrical boxes had open grounds, according to our circuit tester thingie. We weren’t really sure what issue that could cause, but we didn’t want to find out. So, Randy walked around in the crazy wind with our tester to find a site that was wired correctly. It took a bunch of tries, but he finally found one. When we finally got into the RV, he turned his pockets inside out and emptied out a bunch of sand, haha.

The City Park was pretty empty, but I imagine it gets busy during the summer, with a putt putt golf course (who could resist the Big Boy statue on the course?), tennis courts, baseball fields, rodeo arena and a swimming pool. The red-stone, pueblo style pool house was built in the 1940 and is actually on the National Register of Historic Places. We walked around a bit then ate dinner in the RV before heading to town to fuel up.

Even on a Friday evening, there wasn’t much happening in Sayre — it felt like a ghost town, with mostly empty streets. There were several Route 66 “attractions”, including a couple of murals and a cool Western Motel neon sign. (Unfortunately, all the neon lights are busted on it; but I noticed they have a Go Fund Me page to try to raise money for repairs.) The stop served its purpose though, and after a decent night’s rest, we hit the road again!
